For a small business, local SEO is the highest-ROI marketing there is: it targets people nearby who are ready to buy, and the competition is a dozen neighbors — not the whole internet. This is the starter playbook I recommend to every local client.
Claim and complete your Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is your second homepage. Claim it, pick the exact primary category, write a keyword-rich description, add real photos, set correct hours and holidays, and turn on messaging. Businesses with complete profiles and 50+ photos get dramatically more direction requests and calls than bare listings.
Reviews and citations do the heavy lifting
Ask every happy customer for a Google review — a simple link or QR code at checkout beats any software. Respond to all reviews within days. Then make your name, address and phone number identical everywhere: website footer, Facebook, directories and data aggregators. Inconsistent citations are the most common local ranking killer I see.
Finally, give each core service its own page with the city in the title, H1 and content — one strong service page beats five thin ones. That on-page work pairs with the general technical SEO checklist, and if you need the site itself rebuilt, see my development services.
“Local SEO is won in the boring fundamentals: accurate listings, real reviews and pages that match the query.”
