Classic SEO asks: how do I rank #1 and earn the click? AEO — answer engine optimization — asks a different question: how do I become the answer that ChatGPT, Gemini or AI Overviews quote? Same internet, different finish line.
What stays the same
The foundation does not change. Crawlability, page speed, topical authority, backlinks and E-E-A-T still decide which sources AI systems trust. An uncrawlable page cannot be cited, and a source nobody links to will not be picked. If your technical SEO is broken, your AEO is zero.
What AEO adds on top
Answer engines lift quotable passages, so structure beats length. Lead with a 40–60 word direct answer, define entities plainly, use descriptive H2/H3 headings as questions, and mark answers with FAQ, HowTo and Speakable schema. Add visible authorship, dates and sources — AI systems weight first-hand expertise and verifiable claims far more than generic filler.
- SEO goal: ranking + click. AEO goal: citation + quotation
- SEO unit: the page. AEO unit: the passage
- SEO signals: keywords, links, UX. AEO signals: definitions, structure, schema, authority
“Write pages for humans, structure passages for machines.”
My practical rule: write every article so it ranks classically and reads quotably. That is also how AI search visibility compounds — one well-structured page serves both engines.
