Search used to be ten blue links. Now an AI answer sits above them, assembled from a handful of cited sources — and for simple questions many users never scroll past it. That is the whole shift: traffic concentrates on sources worth citing.
What actually changes
Informational clicks shrink while transactional and navigational intent holds up — nobody buys through an AI summary alone. The winners are pages with original data, first-hand experience, tools or depth that a summary cannot replace. Thin affiliate-style content is the biggest loser.
The GEO playbook that holds up
Generative engine optimization is mostly classic SEO plus quotability. Publish original findings with named authors and dates, answer each target question in a tight passage near the top, structure with question-style headings, and add FAQ, HowTo and Speakable schema so machines can parse the answer. Then earn the same backlinks and mentions as before — AI systems inherit the web's trust graph.
One underrated lever: be present where assistants look beyond your site — documentation, forums, review platforms and directories. Citations follow entity presence, not just your domain. Read AEO vs SEO for the full comparison, or get the foundation fixed through my development services.
“In an answer economy, the most quotable source wins — not the longest page.”
